Fillings & Sealants

Tooth decay and cavities are common dental issues. A tooth-colored filling can help restore your tooth and prevent the problem from worsening.

Tooth Fillings and Sealants in Barrhaven, ON

What is a tooth filling?

Cavities and tooth decay are common dental problems, but they can quickly be addressed through a simple restoration procedure known as a tooth filling. This treatment involves filling the decayed area with a composite or amalgam material to restore the tooth’s natural shape and function. We offer both options but typically prefer composite fillings as they appear more natural and are less noticeable than amalgam fillings.

What are dental sealants?

Dental sealants are a preventive treatment that aims to protect teeth from cavities. They are commonly used for children, but adults can benefit from them too. Sealants are applied as a thin coating on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, where cavities are most likely to form. By filling in the crevices, grooves, and fissures of the teeth, sealants create a smoother surface that is easier to clean with a toothbrush. This helps reduce the accumulation of bacteria in these areas, making it less likely for cavities to develop. Sealants are a quick, affordable, and painless option for preventing cavities and avoiding the need for tooth fillings.

  • How do cavity fillings work?

Cavity fillings are required when a tooth has holes or damage due to tooth decay. If left untreated, the decay can spread and cause more damage to the tooth. During the filling procedure, the dentist cleans the decay inside the cavity, usually with a drill, to prevent further damage. However, this doesn’t fix the damage that has already occurred, so a filling is necessary. The filling aims to replace the missing or destroyed part of the tooth caused by tooth decay. The dentist molds the filling to match the shape of the surrounding tooth, restoring the tooth’s strength and preventing further decay.

  • What types of filling materials are available?

Various materials can be used to fill cavities in teeth. These include gold, porcelain, silver amalgam (a mixture of mercury, silver, tin, zinc, and copper), tooth-colored plastic, composite resin fillings, and glass ionomer containing glass particles. The choice of material depends on factors such as the extent and location of the decay, your dentist’s recommendation, and your insurance coverage.

  • Will I have tooth sensitivity after a filling?

After getting a filling, it is expected to feel pain in your teeth and gums once the numbing wears off. Tooth sensitivity is also common when drinking or eating anything hot or cold and when brushing or flossing near the filled tooth. Tender gums are also typical after a cavity filling.

You can take an anti-inflammatory drug such as Advil or Motrin to minimize tooth sensitivity. It is also recommended to temporarily avoid consuming hot, cold, or acidic foods and beverages, such as fruit, wine, and yogurt. Brush and floss your teeth more gently, and consider using a desensitizing toothpaste like Sensodyne or Colgate Sensitive.

  • How long does a dental sealant last?

Dental sealants have been around since the 1970s and have proven effective in preventing tooth decay. They are usually placed on the chewing surfaces of teeth and can last for several years. If a sealant wears off, it can be replaced with a new one. It’s important to note that sealants only protect the tooth surface they are placed on. Using fluoride and practicing good oral hygiene is necessary to safeguard all tooth surfaces from decay and cavities.

  • Who is eligible to get dental sealants?

Dental sealants are a preventive measure designed for healthy teeth that have not yet developed cavities. Usually, they are applied to permanent molars shortly after they erupt, typically between the ages of 6 and 12. However, adults can also benefit from sealants if their childhood sealants have worn off or if they are starting to develop cavities in other teeth for the first time. Investing in affordable dental sealants can help you avoid more extensive and expensive oral health treatments in the future.
